Stage 1

Caribbean Coast & Inland

Stage 1 is split into an A and B, with A truly beginning at the Caribbean Ocean, and B, slightly inland. Starting at Stage 1A can be logistically challenging, so for many people, they’ll start the adventure at 1B, which cuts out the labyrinth of boat rides through the Pacuare Reserve.

Notes: Lots of h20 & sunblock

Logistics

Travelling from San Jose to the coast and completing all of Stage 1 is a big undertaking unless you’re with a guided service. Organizing a stay close to the start of the trail is a good idea. If you plan on completing 1A then you will need to arrange for a boat as well.

Planning tips for the DIY hiker:

  • Getting to the Carribbean from San Jose can be done by Uber, bus or Caribe Shuttle
  • Green Gold Lodge works with hikers and offers Pacuare Reserve transport, meals and lodging, simplifying things for you.
  • Can’t say it enough, the FarOut app Camino guide has intricate information on shuttles and logistics.
